I absolutely love thunderstorms, and where I live, I see my fair share of them. Not just the friendly ones that blow through with a bit of a light show, but window-rattling ones that make me question just how well the roof is held down.
The most recent storm that blew through my neck of the woods was less entertaining and more me saying goodbye to the internet and power for a few days. The weird thing was that none of my usual weather apps actually predicted it was coming until after my front yard looked like a war zone.
I heard the thunder in the distance and watched the angry clouds descending out of the window. I also wondered why the weather app didn’t produce an alert, and the radar app showed no rain. Then I opened the Blitzortung live maps and saw the lightning strikes clustering and creeping toward me.
Although it’s not a replacement for official warnings, it did give me real-time storm tracking when my go-to weather app couldn’t. Now, it’s the first site I open when the sky starts telling me it’s time to get the candles out and unplug my PC.

Technically, my weather app was right, it was just far too late
A forecast is only as useful as the data it receives
Like everyone, I check a weather app when deciding whether to bring a jacket with me or whether I should bother watering the plants. Unfortunately, beyond predicting big seasonal systems, apps typically can’t keep up with weather that moves faster than the forecast.
Funnily enough, I only received an official warning regarding the storm after it had already flattened my trees and power lines. And that’s the annoying part. I had the usual warnings, percentages, icons, and little hints that something might be on the way, but it wasn’t communicated very well.
Weather apps are great at telling me there is a 40% chance of something interesting happening at some point today. They are less great at telling me what’s happening right now. That’s why Blitzortung came in handy, because I could see the lightning strikes in real time, appearing, clustering, and giving a clear indication of what was headed in my direction.
Blitzortung made the storm feel alive
The color trail showed where the lightning had been and where it was going
The Blitzortung live lightning maps do one thing, but they do it really well — showing live lightning strikes on a map overlay. At first, that sounds a little useless. After all, we can clearly see and hear where lightning strikes as a storm approaches.
When using the Blitzortung lightning maps, you can see not only real-time strikes and their precise location, but the positions of the strikes stay on the map long after the thunder has rattled through your house. The map uses colors to show the age of the strikes, with the newest ones appearing white and older ones becoming darker red across a roughly 20-minute period.
That color trail is what sets Blitzortung apart from a weather app that just puts a lightning bolt where it thinks a storm is. I could see where the storm had been, where the newest strikes were happening, and whether the activity was heading in my direction. It gave the storm a better sense of movement than looking at the radar.
During my most recent storm, that directionality was the information I was missing. The forecasts all told me storms were possible, but Blitzortung showed me with accuracy that it was already on the way.
The cool part is how the map knows where lightning hit

The best part about Blitzortung is that it combines two of my favorite things, which are open-source intelligence (OSINT) and volunteer radio. Blitzortung itself is a volunteer-run lightning detection network, and that makes the map even more interesting once you know what you’re looking at and how it works.
Because lightning is essentially a massive natural spark-gap transmitter, when it strikes, it gives off radio signals. Blitzortung stations listen for those signals, record precise timing information, and then send that data back to servers that process and triangulate the precise location of the lightning strike.
One station can detect that a strike has happened, but several stations hearing the same strike at slightly different times allow the servers to triangulate its precise location. The more receivers there are within detection range, the more timing data the network has to work with, and that’s how the live map becomes so useful.
It doesn’t just stop at location accuracy. It can also detect the sound waves produced by the lightning. On the map interface, you can watch this sound wave as a red circle that expands away from the strike location, giving you an uncannily accurate timeframe in which you can expect to hear the thunder.
Essentially, Blitzortung is like a giant citizen-science instrument that exists to provide more accurate thunderstorm tracking for both civilian and commercial purposes, and I love that. But what I love more is that it’s a result of radio signals detected by receiver stations, timing data, and a heap of people who voluntarily keep the network alive just because storms are so fascinating.
I still checked the radar, because the weather has multiple layers

Blitzortung didn’t make me stop checking all my favorite weather tools. Rather, it just gave me a new, albeit useful, layer to keep an eye on. A weather app tells me what is expected; radar shows me where the rain is, but lightning shows how electrically active the storm system is.
Radar can show me where the heavy rain is and storm directionality to a certain degree. But when that same area starts throwing off lightning strikes, Blitzortung shows undeniably whether I should be taking the cat inside or sitting on the driveway watching the show.
So, for storm watching, I now like using a few layers and apps together:
- Blitzortung or LightningMaps for live lightning activity.
- NOAA/NWS radar for official US radar and warnings.
- Zoom Earth for near-real-time satellite imagery and storm tracking.
- Earth Nullschool for animated wind, weather, ocean, and temperature pattern maps.
- Ventusky, which has almost all of these combined into one neat map.
That’s why I rarely rely on one screen. Radar, lightning, wind, satellite, warnings, and remembering to look up from the phone at the sky all give me different versions of the same storm system. But essentially, Blitzortung is the layer I check when I want to know whether the storm is barreling down on top of me or just passing through.
I’m keeping the lightning map open for the next storm
My weather app gives me the forecast. Blitzortung gives me certainty
Given how specific the functionality of Blitzortung is, it’s not going to replace my weather app any time soon. Accuracy still depends on receiver coverage, signal conditions, and the stations that feed data back to their servers. So, it goes without saying that while it’s pretty accurate, it’s not perfect, and it definitely shouldn’t be used as an all-clear to leave the safety of shelter during an active storm.
During the storm that knocked out my power and internet for days, the normal forecast I received for my remote rural area just gave me a percentage and likelihood of a storm in any given 24-hour period. Blitzortung’s real-time lightning maps meant I could see the storm coming and confirmed it was going to impact me directly. It gave me enough time to secure loose things in my yard and put my car under cover before the hail hit.
That’s why I am keeping it in my storm-watching toolkit. I will still check the radar for rain, take notice of actual safety information, and watch the sky. But Blitzortung adds what I need to turn a theoretical storm into the real deal.
